Republicans have subpoenaed the Clintons to testify about Jeffrey Epstein. Will it backfire?
For political connoisseurs of a certain vintage, it feels like deja vu all over again.

To anyone who witnessed Bill Clinton’s presidency in the 1990s, the once unimaginable spectacle of a sitting president testifying under oath over sexual misconduct allegations levelled on a wave of Republican antipathy became so familiar as to seem almost routine.

Clinton gave sworn testimony twice in 1998, each occasion filmed for posterity: first in a suit filed by Paula Jones, an Arkansas state employee who accused him of sexually harassing her; then to a grand jury over the nature of his affair with Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern.

This week, a re-enactment of those half-forgotten ancient political battles will play out when the former president and his wife, Hillary, give depositions under oath to the House of Representatives’ oversight committee on the Jeffrey Epstein files.

Live coverage from The Guardian:

Hillary Clinton says she has no information about Epstein crimes; Democrats call for Trump to be deposed ‘immediately’ – live
Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton is to testify behind closed doors later today before a congressional committee investigating the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.

Former president Bill Clinton is scheduled to answer questions tomorrow from the Republican-led House Oversight Committee about his relations with Epstein, who died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial.

The Clintons had initially rejected subpoenas ordering them to testify in the panel’s probe, but the Democratic power couple eventually agreed to do so after House Republicans threatened to hold them in contempt of Congress, AFP reported.

The proceedings will take place behind closed doors but will be recorded, with footage expected to be released later – an arrangement reminiscent of what happened with Clinton’s 1998 grand jury testimony, which was made public the following month.

Bill Clinton has denied any wrongdoing but is under scrutiny over admissions that he flew on Epstein’s private plane several times. Photos in the recently released files show the ex-president in potentially compromising poses – particularly one with him in a hot tub with Epstein and a woman whose identity is redacted. Hillary, for her part, denies ever having met Epstein but acknowledges meeting Ghislaine Maxwell, his partner and convicted co-conspirator.

For Republicans, putting a searchlight on the Clintons has the advantage of deflecting attention from Donald Trump’s relationship with Epstein.

Your Questions About the Clintons Testifying Before Congress, Answered
Former President Bill Clinton and Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are set to appear for deposition this week as part of a House investigation into convicted sex predator Jeffrey Epstein.

Hillary Clinton’s deposition is scheduled for Feb. 26, and Bill Clinton’s is scheduled for the day after. Both depositions follow the release of millions of documents related to Epstein by the Department of Justice that have led to a string of high-profile investigations, resignations and other ripple effects in multiple countries.

Both Clintons agreed to testify after a drawn-out fight over a congressional subpoena, as House Republicans were setting up a floor vote on Feb. 4 to hold both of them in contempt, which could have resulted in up to 12 months of prison time. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer of Kentucky hailed the victory in a statement, vowing to deliver “transparency and accountability for the American people and for survivors.”

Aside from the Clintons, four other people have been subpoenaed to testify following the release of the Epstein files. In the past few weeks, Ghislaine Maxwell and billionaire Les Wexner have testified before the committee regarding their ties to Epstein. Epstein’s longtime accountant Richard Kahn and Epstein’s personal lawyer Darren Indyke will also testify after receiving subpoenas.

Hillary Clinton says she has no new information on Jeffrey Epstein in testimony excoriating Republicans
Members of the Republican-led House Oversight Committee are scheduled to question former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday as part of their investigation into the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The closed-door interview, which will be videotaped, is set to take place in Chappaqua, New York, where the Clintons have a house. The committee will meet with former President Bill Clinton the next day for a similar deposition.

The in-person interviews come after months of bitter back-and-forth between the former first couple and the committee, which at one point threatened to hold the Clintons in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with a subpoena it issued in August.

Hillary Clinton testifies she has no information on Epstein’s crimes and doesn’t recall meeting him
WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is testifying before U.S. House lawmakers in New York on Thursday as part of a congressional investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, starting off two days of depositions that will also include former President Bill Clinton.

The closed-door depositions in the Clintons’ hometown of Chappaqua, a typically quiet hamlet north of New York City, come after months of tense back-and-forth between the former high-powered Democratic couple and the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee. It will be the first time that a former president has been forced to testify before Congress.

Yet the demand for a reckoning over Epstein’s abuse of underage girls has become a near-unstoppable force on Capitol Hill and beyond.

President Donald Trump, a Republican who has expressed regret that the Clintons are being forced to testify, bowed last year to pressure to release case files on Epstein, who killed himself in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial. The Clintons, too, agreed to testify after their offers of sworn statements were rebuffed by the Oversight panel and its chairman, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., threatened criminal contempt of Congress charges against them.

“We have a very clear record that we’ve been willing to talk about,” Hillary Clinton said in an interview with the BBC earlier this month. She added that her husband had flown with Epstein for charitable trips and that she did not recall meeting Epstein but had interacted with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former girlfriend and confidant, at conferences hosted by the Clinton Foundation.
