My father worked at Los Alamos.

He believed — for most of my childhood and most of my adult life — that America had to be strong. That our strength was what kept authoritarianism in check. That the West standing firm was the reason my grandfather’s Jewish cousins in Europe had vanished and we had not.

That was the deal he thought we’d made. You build the bombs. You keep the light on. You hold the line.

It just isn’t true anymore.

Lately, there’s a lot of talk about the West being strong again.

Alex Karp at Palantir writes books about it. Politicians campaign on it. Remilitarize Germany. Reinstate the draft. Build the weapons. Very serious men at very serious conferences saying very serious things about civilization.

But there is no West.

Not in any meaningful sense. What there is is a network of elite wealth teamed up with tech power and war power and oil power, moving across borders in ways that have nothing to do with democracy or freedom or anything my father would have recognized.

We know this because of a dead man named Jeffrey Epstein.
