Jeffrey Epstein tried to buy a palace in Morocco a few weeks before his death.

The financier signed a $14.95m (£11m) wire transfer on July 5, 2019 for the purchase of Bin Ennakhil, a 15-bedroom luxury home on an 11-acre estate near Marrakech, files released by the US department of justice (DoJ) show.

He also agreed to pay €18m (£13.3m) to buy the offshore company that owned it.

The American paedophile had a long-term interest in the architecture of Morocco and the country itself, which has no extradition treaty with the US. He first tried to buy Bin Ennakhil in 2011, but disputed the price and terms.

Marc Leon, an estate agent in Marrakech, said: “Epstein had been convicted of sex crimes [in 2008] and had served his sentence. There was therefore nothing to prevent him from attempting to purchase property in Morocco. We had no way of knowing that he had continued his terrible crimes.”
